JOE MARTIN: "SQUAD ARE FEELING GOOD"

31 August 2012

Full back encouraged by positive start...

Gills defender Joe Martin says all members of the squad are capable of playing in the first team.

Martin, who scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over Wycombe last week, says the players are feeling good despite having suffered their first competitive defeat of the season against Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup earlier in the week.

Speaking in his press conference he said:

“We are all feeling good, even the other night when we were playing a Championship side. At times I thought we played nice stuff- we didn’t quite get the result in the end but it’s looking good.

“It’s still early days in the season but it’s exciting times.”

The Gills management have been working hard in training to get the players playing in a certain way and the full back says it’s working at the moment.

He said: “It suits the players we have got – I like to go forward and Fishy [Matt Fish] does on the other side but we have players in the squad who can all play that way so I think it suits us well and we will do well with it.

“There will be things he [the manager] will look to improve with us all the time but it’s all coming together.

“There’s a lot going on behind the scenes which all helps.”

Martin was asked what in particular has changed over the summer, he replied:

“It’s a culmination from everything from the backroom staff and James Russell the fitness coach and the gaffer who has got us playing the way he wants us to play.

“When you look at our squad there are players who can go in and play. There’s not just one team that we have to play every week, we have players who can fill in and do just as well and that’s good, we have a strong squad this year.

“Everyone is on their toes and that’s how it should be.”

Finally the left back spoke about the game against Chesterfield at the weekend – he believes the Gills can come away with three points but warns that the visitors will be a strong outfit.

He said: “They have just come down, they’re a footballing team though and it should be an interesting game. We are full of confidence so we will be going in to it looking for a win.”
