BIRTHS...

1901 - Bill Pickering

The Birmingham born left-back joined the Gills from Merthyr Town in August 1926.

He made the first of his 49 appearances at home to QPR in the second game of the season.

In November 1927 he left the club for Huddersfield Town.

DEATH...

1982 - William Baldwin

The centre-forward, previously with Chesterfield, Barrow and Oldham Athletic, arrived at Priestfield from Southport in the summer of 1934 and made his debut against Torquay United on the opening day of the season.

His first goal didn't come until a 2-2 home draw with Southend United in November but it proved to be the first of 28, including a hat-trick in an FA Cup tie at Exeter, in his 66 appearances.

In June 1936 he returned north, signing for Crewe Alexandra.

William died in Coventry on November 1 1982
