BIRTHS...

1894 - Jonah Wilcox

The centre-forward signed from QPR in August 1927 and made the first of his 60 appearances at the Valley against Charlton in the first game of the season.

He scored the first of his 30 goals for the club in the next match, a 3-3 draw at QPR.
 
On leaving the Gills, Jonah who'd previously played for Bristol City, Bradford Park Avenue, New Brighton and Bristol Rovers, joined Kidderminster Harriers in July 1929.


1934 - Ron Newman

Freddie Cox brought the former Portsmouth winger to Gillingham from Crystal Palace in September 1963.

He scored on his debut in a 2-1 home win over Darlington and three months later he registered a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory over Southport at Priestfield.

He went on to score 22 times in 101 games before embarking on a playing then coaching career with a number of clubs in the U.S.A


1972 - Simon Osborn

The experienced midfielder, who had played for Crystal Palace, Reading and Wolves amongst others, joined the Gills in October 2001 and made his debut as a late substitute against Norwich City.

He went on to score five times in 49 games for the club before having spells at Walsall, where was assistant-manager to Paul Merson at one point, and Hereford United.

Simon returned to Kent with Bromley in September 2006 and later had a three month spell as player-manager at Hayes Lane but resigned in April 2008.

Time at Croydon Athletic and Cray Wanderers followed and his most recent next port of call was as player-coach at Erith & Belvedere in 2010


1976 - Gareth Knott

The right-winger came to Gillingham on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in February 1995 and made his debut against Northampton Town at Priestfield Stadium.

He went on to make five appearances for the club before returning to White Hart Lane.

Following his release from Spurs the former Welsh youth international returned to Wales and played for a number of sides, the 36-year-old is still playing for table-topping Ynysddu Crusaders AFC in the Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Division 3.


1991 - Tom Murphy

The young striker stepped up from the youth team to make one senior appearance for the Gills when replacing Andy Barcham as a second-half substitute against Colchester United in the Johnstone Paints Trophy.

After leaving the club he has played for Lewes, Thurrock, Farnborough Town, Horsham and has been with Margate since February 2012.
