BIRTHS…

1962- Tony Butler

The former Hartlepool United schoolboy joined the Gills as a trainee in January 1990 and signed professional terms in May 1991.

This was a matter of days after making his first-team debut against Blackpool.

He went on to make 179 appearances, scoring seven times, before Blackpool paid £225,000 for the central defenders services in July 1996.

Tony later played for Port Vale, WBA and Bristol City before returning to Blackpool in February 2005.

After leaving Bloomfield Road a second time he dropped into non-league football playing for Forest Green Rovers, Newport County (loan), Hinckley Town and Alfreton Town.

1987 - Chris Whelpdale

Having played for Maldon Town and Billericay Town, Chris joined the Gills on a permanent basis from Peterborough United in the summer of 2011 having previously scored three times for Gillingham in four appearances during a loan spell.

He has since gone on to score more than 20 goals in 70-odd appearances for the club.

‘Whelps’ celebrates his 26th birthday today.
