The Cliffe born centre-forward joined the Gills from local side Kent Alloys in January 1938.

He scored on his debut against Exeter City in a 2-1 home win and scored seven goals in 18 league and cup games as the club failed to win re-election and lost their Football League status.

Fred remained in the Southern League but it was after war was declared in September 1939 and the Gills had to play in the Kent Regional League with Herbert netting 18 goals in all competitions.

The Welshman moved to Gillingham from Coventry City in January 1953 and made his debut away at QPR.

He went on to score twice in 26 games for the club.

After leaving Priestfield Stadium spells followed at Kidderminster Harriers, Banbury Spencer and Rugby Town.
