IPSWICH TOWN PREVIEW

15 July 2013

We look ahead to tomorrow's home pre-season friendly

GILLINGHAM v IPSWICH TOWN

Tuesday July 16 2013
Pre-season friendly
MEMS Priestfield Stadium
Kick-off: 7.30pm

TEAM NEWS
Having returned to pre-season training on June 26 the Gills went on to beat Faversham Town 4-2, Ashford Town 2-1 and Bromley 3-0 in pre-season games before embarking on a week-long training camp in Le Touquet and returned from France on Sunday.

All four of Martin Allen’s summer signings, midfielder Amine Linganzi and striking trio Bayo Akinfenwa, Antonio German and Cody McDonald, are all likely to feature as Mick McCarthy brings his Ipswich Town side to Priestfield.

Following their week-long training camp in Kildare, Ipswich, who ended last season 14th in the Championship table, beat Irish outfit Shelbourne 2-0 at Tolka Park on July 6 thanks to a brace from Daryl Murphy.

The former Celtic forward was on target again four days later, along with David McGoldrick from the penalty spot, as the Tractor Boys won 2-1 at Crawley while a young XI won 1-0 at Chippenham Town on Saturday thanks to a goal from trialist Joe Ward.

Town defender Tyrone Mings missed the game at his former club Chippenham Town on Saturday with a knock while fellow defender Aaron Cresswell has also been sidelined through injury.

TOWN SIGNINGS
Three players, midfielder Jay Tabb and forwards David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy, who were all on loan with the Tractor Boys last season, have signed permanent deals with the club during the summer months.

New faces at Portman Road are goalkeeper Dean Gerken, who penned a two-year deal following a successful trial having been released by Bristol City.

He is joined by former Robins team-mates Paul Anderson and Cole Skuse. Winger Anderson arrived in a swap-deal which saw forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas move to Ashton Gate while midfielder Cole Skuse penned a three-year deal after ending his 17-year association with the Bristol outfit.

South African international defender Bongani Khumalo of Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City midfielder Kemy Agustien and Waterford winger Jack Doherty are the latest players to be linked with a move to Portman Road this summer.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
If you were to ignore all the competitive games between the two sides, there have been seven previous friendly meetings with the Suffolk side although the first was the only one not to be in pre-season.

This one came on February 15 1966 when the Gills beat Second Division Ipswich 4-2 in front of 3,587 here at Priestfield. Centre-forward Bill Brown, a new signing who cost £2,000 from Bedford Town, bagged himself a hat-trick which was added to by Brian Gibbs.
