EX GILLS ROUND-UP

30 June 2013

Richard Day brings us his round-up of the latest ex players on the move

Cody McDonald, who returned to Priestfield on loan last season scoring four times in seven games, is one of eight players that have been told they do not feature in the plans of Coventry City boss Stephen Pressley.

Another striker, Ben Strevens, who scored two goals in 15 appearances for Martin Allen’s side following his arrival from Wycombe Wanderers last summer, has been on the move again. The 33-year-old left Priestfield in the January transfer window when re-joining former club Dagenham & Redbridge but he has now signed for ambitious Conference South outfit Eastleigh, managed by former Gills assistant-boss Richard Hill. Ex-Gills Ross Flitney and Dean Beckwith will be among his new Spitfires team-mates.

Midfielder Michael Richardson, who played twice for the Gills last season while on loan from Newcastle United, has signed a one-year contract extension with the Magpies.

Fellow midfielder Alex Brown has signed a new one-year deal with Ryman Premier League new boys Maidstone United. The 20-year-old had joined the Stones on a permanent basis, following a loan spell, in January after being released here at Priestfield.

Former loanee Gavin Tomlin has agreed a move to Port Vale when his Southend United contract expires at the end of this month. He was top scorer at Roots Hall last season netting 16 goals.

Former Manchester United starlet Febian Brandy, who scored twice in nine appearances for the Gills in the 2009-10 campaign, has finalised his move to Sheffield United. The striker has penned a two-year deal at Bramall Lane after rejecting an offer to remain at Walsall.

Striker Marlon King could be making a return to the Premier League after rumours have linked him with a move to Steve Bruce’s Hull City. He has been told he can leave cash-strapped Birmingham City.

Former striker Neil Harris has announced his retirement following a season of knee problems. The 35-year-old damaged knee ligaments playing for hometown club Southend in September and six months later he underwent knee surgery. Neil has since agreed to become part of the coaching set-up under new boss Steve Lomas at Millwall where he remain’s the club’s record goalscorer.

Ex-youth team striker George Purcell has signed for Ryman Premier League AFC Hornchurch. An FA Trophy winner with Ebbsfleet United in 2008 the much-travelled forward ended last season with Margate.
