BIRTHS...

1971 - Ian Cox

The Croydon born defender played at Carshalton Athletic as a youngster before joining Crystal Palace in a £40,000 deal in March 1994.

Two years later, and with his opportunities limited at Selhurst Park, he moved to Bournemouth who were managed by ex-Gill Mel Machin.

He scored 17 goals in 209 games for the Cherries before a fee of £500,000 took him north to Burnley in February 2000 where he clocked up another 130-odd appearances.

Then in the summer of 2003 a free transfer brought him to Priestfield Stadium and he made his Gillingham debut on the opening day of the season in the scorching heat at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane, the game ending goalless.

In all Ian scored six goals in 167 matches for the Gills before joining Maidstone United following his release in March 2008.

Ian also made 16 appearances for Trinidad & Tobago and was in their squad at the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany but failed to get any match action.
