TAYLOR: I WAS PLEASED WITH US

Gills boss takes the positives from Port Vale defeat

Peter Taylor said there were enough good performances in the defeat to Port Vale to feel positive going forward.

Two goals early in the second half from Chris Robertson and Tom Pope proved enough to seal a 2-1 victory for the hosts, but that was only after Danny Kedwell had opened the scoring on 13 minutes courtesy of a well taken header from Amine Linganzi’s cross.

Gills had opportunities towards the end of the game but were unable to beat Chris Neal for a second time.

After the game Peter said: “In the first half we were excellent, I was really pleased with us and we played some good Football. It was controlled and we could have scored more than one goal to be honest.

“That was terrific, but the massive negative was the start of the second half where, I think, we conceded two poor goals when we didn’t get the first touch from the corner and we didn’t get the second touch from the corner, so that was disappointing for us.

“We then gave another poor goal away where the shape could have been better defensively and a little bit quicker, but another positive was the way we finished and we deserved to get a goal, so it was a mixed day again.

“Leon Legge had a free header; Adam Barrett had a free header and then we had the opportunity which dropped to Leon in front of their keeper, and to be fair to Bradley Dack, he only had 10 minutes but he had two or three chances when he came on.

“We finished OK but we had a poor period just after half time.

“They have just said in the dressing room that it isn’t the first time it has happened so I know it’s happened before I’ve come here.

“It’s an area we have got to improve on because people are switching off and allowing the opposition to get the first touches and that’s a very dangerous situation.

“When people get tired and switch off, because it’s a match day, at times, there isn’t a lot a Manager can do. All you can do is keep working at it and players know they have to keep working aswell.”

More reaction from Peter Taylor and Myles Weston to come.
