Striker calls on squad to remain upbeat as club looks for first win

Cody McDonald says it is important the squad maintain a positive focus as they look to register their first win of the season.

He said: “We are just not quite getting over the winning line, but it will come at some stage. We can’t keep playing well and working hard for each other and it not happen.


“We have a couple of games that, on paper, we could get results from and it’s important that we do that. A couple of back to back wins and we might be mid table so it’s important we stay positive.


“The Manager has been great, it’s been difficult for him aswell but he’s stuck with the lads and getting us confident and looking after us on and off the pitch.


“We are only seven games in to the league and the lads will never give up. We have great characters in the dressing room, we are scoring goals now and we defended brilliantly.


“To be fair to them after they got the goal they kept the ball well and we didn’t get a sniff. They saw the game out how you should do when you’re 2-1 up.”

He said: “The Coventry boys have a good record here [Sixfields] and they’ve had it tough off the pitch but they’re doing well and I wish them luck for the season.


“Take away the ten points and they must be in the play-offs at least and the Manager has turned it around to be fair, he has a great squad with great players and I’m sure they will be pushing this year.


“The Coventry fans were great when I was here and they stuck by the club with the bad times we were going through.


“It was nice to score against my old club but at the end of the day it didn’t mean anything because we didn’t get a result so hopefully I’ll score next week and we’ll get a win.


“I’ll keep giving my all for Gillingham as all the players do and we just need to stick together, keep performing and we have great quality in the dressing room and we’ve shown it over the last couple of weeks.”
