Gills boss heaps praise on his players after a stunning 4-0 win over Sheffield United

Justin Edinburgh couldn’t contain his pride following Gillingham’s 4-0 win over Sheffield United on the opening day of the season.

The Gills put in an incredible display to see off the Blades, scoring twice either side of half time to record a memorable victory at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

The result puts Gills top of League One after the first game, and speaking afterwards Justin said:

“We’ll enjoy the result and the performance tonight because the players have earned that right and we are delighted where we are.

“But as I said before the game to the players nothing was going to be won today in terms of where we are looking to get to but it certainly gives us a foundation and a platform to build off.

“You can’t always guarantee a result, there is no form but I thought we were excellent from start to finish and I’m very proud of the players.

“Credit to them, for six weeks they have worked tremendously hard and we played with energy and really pressed them.

“In front of a big crowd against the favourites for the league with a young side, that all made me immensely proud.”

Edinburgh was asked if he expected more of Sheffield United, however he believed the display of his own players should grab the headlines.

He added: “It was about us; we didn’t allow them to settle and I always like to look at my side’s performance rather than the opposition.

“We’ve put in a lot of preparation and we thought we might exploit them from set pieces and the game plan worked very well.”
