GAFFER: WE DIDN'T DO ENOUGH

26 September 2015

Boss disappointed as Gills suffer defeat at Oakwell

Justin Edinburgh said his players need to get back on track quickly following the club’s second successive defeat in the league.

Gills were beaten 2-0 by Barnsley on Saturday with both goals scored before the break, and the Manager wants the levels of performance to improve.

He said: “Obviously disappointed, no one enjoys losing – the dressing room is full of disappointment and to be honest it’s the first time this season we haven’t done enough to win the game.

“The first one was against the run of play, there is no doubt we controlled the game and looked comfortable and was carrying out what we had spoken about in the week in regards to how we wanted to play.

“The second one was a real blow for us; to concede at that time and being 2-0 down was tough and disappointing.

“Our levels of performance have been excellent so far this season and maybe it's something we look at going into the next couple of games where we freshen one or two things up.

“We did that today, we brought Ben Williamson and Emmanuel Osadebe back in so we had fresh impetus but goals change games and to go in at 2-0 down was hard to take.

“We huffed and puffed but I don’t think our inventiveness in and around the final third was good enough today to win the game.

“The players have gone to the end, they’ve tried but I just felt it’s not been at the level we want.”

Gills return to Priestfield on Tuesday against Fleetwood and Justin is hoping a bumper crowd at Priestfield will get the best out of the players.

He added: “We need to get ourselves back on track because what we don't want to do is let this good start fizzle out. We said there would be some ups and downs along the way but there are fresh challenges ahead.

“We are looking forward to getting back and getting a performance in front of our own fans. We will be looking to create more chances than we did today.”
