Preview: Charlton Athletic v Gillingham

Gills begin the new year with a trip to the Valley.

31 December 2017

Steve Lovell's side prepare for their sixth game in 17 days.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC V GILLINGHAM

The Valley

Monday January 1, 2018

Sky Bet League 1

Kick-Off, 3pm

Team News:

Conor Wilkinson is a slight doubt for Monday’s game after receiving a whack to his hip in Saturday’s match against AFC Wimbledon. Scott Wagstaff is rated 50/50 after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Tom Eaves could be recalled to the starting XI with Greg Cundle pushing to keep his place in attack.

As for Charlton they have a number of injury concerns to their squad with Harry Lennon, Chris Solly, Jason Pearce, Tariqe Fosu and Billy Clarke all likely to be sidelined.

Ricky Holmes could return after coming on as a sub in Friday’s 0-0 draw at Wigan while Jake Forster-Caskey, Patrick Bauer and Leon Best will all be assessed up until the last minute.

Manager Comments:

Karl Robinson: - “I think across the first-team and U23s we have got something like 16 or 17 players unavailable for selection. I’ve never known anything like that before but the season doesn’t stop for people to feel sorry for you.

“You’ve got to stop feeling sorry for yourself and put your front foot forward.”

Steve Lovell – “It doesn’t matter who you play against, we want to win, and that’s the mentality I want from the players and they are giving everything.

“Our away form has been good; Charlton had a good result at Wigan but they will know about us. We are really looking forward to it.”

Previous Meetings:

The clubs last met at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on September 16 earlier this season when a Tom Eaves strike was enough to help clinch all three points for the Gills in a 1-0 win.

Tomas Holy was named `Man of the Match` after a string of fine saves kept Charlton at bay.

In total the two clubs have met on 31 occasions. Charlton have won 14 of those ties with Gills only recording five wins. Gillingham have never won at the Valley.

Odds:

Charlton win – 4/5

Draw – 13/5

Gills win – 10/3

Special: Tom Eaves to score first in a 2-2 draw = 75/1.
