Gills defender Barry Fuller disappointed but upbeat following Doncaster draw.

I would have swapped the goal for victory, says Fuller.

Gillingham defender Barry Fuller was disappointed to only pick up a point as Gills were pegged back at the Keepmoat Stadium on two occasions, eventually having to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw.

Fuller opened the scoring after six minutes when he thundered in a half volley from 30 yards to score his first ever goal for the club, in his second spell.

Speaking after the game Fuller said: “Everyone is down and disappointed. Despite the fact they’re doing well, and they are flying, when you score so late on you think you’ll be okay. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the luck with that deflection at the end though. All in all, its a positive, it’s a point on the table and a point people probably would have taken before the game.”

Fuller, who notched his first goal for Gills at the 161st time of asking was pleased to score but admitted he would have preferred the three points.

STEVE LOVELL REACTION

“To be fair I wanted the ball from the free-kick and in my head I was sticking it in the corner – as soon as it came to me I wanted to shoot and try and hit the target and luckily it went in to the bottom corner. I didn’t know what to do, the fans were a bit far away to run to that end. It was nice to get on the scoresheet and put us one nil up, but I would rather give that up and take the three points.”

Gillingham had to soak up a lot of pressure throughout the game but showed good resilience to manage the waves, Fuller continued: “They had a lot of possession, but they didn’t threaten much through the middle of the box. We defended well when crosses came in but to concede from two set pieces is disappointing. It’s hard to take when you work so hard to defend your goal from open play.”

Gillingham make the long journey down to Plymouth on Tuesday evening and Fuller is keen to build on the point gained at Doncaster.

He added: “It’s a massive game and they’re down there as well. If we go there and get three points, then we can say this is a great point. We will go there confident of getting a result.”
