Dom Samuel reflects on Blackpool win.

Gills striker delighted with Blackpool brace.

Dominic Samuel’s second Gills debut got off to the perfect start last Saturday in the 2-0 win over Blackpool, nodding in his first after just three minutes.

Things got even better when he crashed in his second at an empty MEMS Priestfield Stadium; a strike that deserved a packed stadium and a rocking Rainham End.

The pacey striker, immediately becoming a hit with fans once more, spoke to the club’s official website about his dream start and the importance of getting off the mark early.

Early Goal

“You want to start your goal tally as soon as possible. Getting a goal on your debut does release pressure. Strikers want to get as many goals as they can; you don’t want to rest on what you did last week.

“It was a pretty perfect home debut. On a personal note, it was a good day for me getting the two goals and helping the team get the three points. As a team it was a good performance.

“In this team, we’ve got a few big boys. I’m good at heading the ball. When the ball did come across the box, as a striker your natural instinct is to get within that six yard box. The ball fortunately fell in front of me and I just tapped it in with my head. It was an easy goal for me.”

The second-half winner

“When you can see the goal and are in shooting range you just take that chance and that’s what I did. It is a team sport and if there are players in a better position I will take that option. But in that particular moment, I saw the goal and I just thought I would hit it.”

Playing with Vadaine Oliver

“Big V… he’s so good on the ball and he’s strong. With him up top it helps the team get forward.

“When you’ve got a player like V up top, you can gamble because 90% of the time he is going to win the ball and get the flick ons. The deliveries that have been coming in, especially from free-kicks and corners, is something special from this team. He will be key for us this year.”

Shrewsbury away this Saturday

“Every away game, especially in this league, is going to be tough; anyone can beat anyone. But on the back of our performances from the last few weeks I’m really confident we will go there and get three points.

“The gaffer has got a way of playing and that’s what he has been drilling into us. I feel like the team is only going to get better. We can really go for it this year.”
