Grimsby Town v Gilingham

Blundell Park

Sky Bet League 2

Saturday 2nd September

Kick-Off, 3.00pm

Team News:

Dom Jefferies and Oli Hawkins remain side-lined for the trip to Grimsby through injury. George Lapslie is closer to making a return, however he remains a doubt for this weekend with the player more likely to come back into contention for a place in the starting eleven next week against Harrogate.

As for Grimsby, Charles Vernam has been ruled out for a few months after picking up a thigh injury. He joins Donovan Wilson, Otis Khan and Kieran Green in the treatment room.

Niall Maher could play a part having overcome a hamstring strain.

Manager Comments:

Neil Harris: “We gave a good account of ourselves against Luton.

“We come into the Grimsby fixture full of confidence.

"I think it will be a tight game, the first goal when you’re playing in League 2 can be vital and that has proven the case in our opening five games.”

Previous Meetings:

Our most recent encounter with Grimsby Town came in last season’s reverse league fixture, as the Mariners visited Priestfield back in February of this year.

A goalless first half that day saw both teams return from the break looking to secure all three points. George Lapslie put the Gills in front on 56 minutes, meeting a dangerous low cross into the area from Dom Jeffries to grab a tap in, guiding the ball past a helpless Max Crocombe.

The visitors fought back and were level with 75 minutes on the clock.

Oliver Hawkins stepped up however, the forward finding the winner for Gillingham in the dying minutes. A sustained period of late pressure resulting in the player rising highest in the box, meeting a cross to send a powerfully headed ball straight into the bottom corner.

Head-to-Head:

The two clubs have met 29 times in all competitions.

Grimsby Town lead the head-to-head with 16 wins to the Gills 12. There have also been 10 draws between the two sides.
