17 June 2014

Former Gillingham FC defender Stephen Butcher has signed for Kent club Maidstone United

Former Gills defender Stephen Butcher has signed for Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United.

The full back was released last month but has moved quickly to secure his short term future, and will remain at The Gallagher Stadium following a successful loan spell at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

During his time at MEMS Priestfield Stadium Stephen made two appearances for the club – his debut coming on the first day of last season at home to Colchester following a serious injury to Matt Fish.

His second game, which was his one and only start for Gills, came in the FA Cup first round replay away at Brackley Town which the club lost 1-0.

The 19-year-old has agreed terms at United along with another former Gillingham player in Alex Brown. The midfielder made one appearance for Gills – that coming in the final match of the 2011/12 season against Morecambe.
