Shaun Williams signs new Gills contract

Gills midfielder puts pen to paper on new contract at ME7.

28 April 2023

New contract signed by midfielder Shaun Williams.

The club is delighted to announce that Shaun Williams has signed a new contract at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

The 36-year-old former Portsmouth man joined the Gills last summer and, in doing so, was reunited with his former manager at Millwall, Neil Harris, and has been a consistent performer in the heart of midfield.

So far this season he has made 47 appearances and scored three times, including a dramatic late winner in a 1-0 victory at home against Carlisle in March.

He becomes the second player to agree new contracts at ME7 for 2023/24 with Max Ehmer having already done so. Cheye Alexander will be staying put having triggered an option in his existing deal.

Williams however is likely to miss the last two fixtures of this season due to injury.

He said: "I'm very happy to be staying at the club. The second half of this season has been excellent and I am excited for the future.

"I enjoy playing here, we'll do our best to finish this season in a positive fashion and carry the momentum into 2023/24."

Shaun, who has stood in as Gills captain for a number of fixtures during the second half of the campaign, has represented Republic of Ireland on three occasions in the past, scoring one goal.
