25 May 2023

Gillingham FC has been charged with misconduct in relation to crowd control for three separate incidents at EFL League Two games during the 2022/23 season.

It’s alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters – and anyone purporting to be its supporters or followers – conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at its game against Colchester United FC on 26 December 2022, and don’t use words or behaviour that are improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting with either express or implied reference to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin.

It’s further alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters – and anyone purporting to be its supporters or followers – conduct themselves in an orderly fashion during its match against Sutton United FC on 29 December 2022 and don’t use words or behaviour that are improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting with either express or implied reference to gender.

It’s also alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters – and anyone purporting to be its supporters or followers – conduct themselves in an orderly fashion at its game against AFC Wimbledon on 25 February 2023 and don’t use words or behaviour that are improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting with either express or implied reference to gender.

The club has until 5 June 2023 to provide its responses to these charges.

“The club has been made aware of the charges brought forwards by the FA.

“Gillingham FC has a zero tolerance approach to any types of abuse and we investigate all matters very seriously.

“There is no place for sexist, racist or insulting behaviour at Priestfield, or in wider society, and we will continue to work with all relevant authorities to ensure those who are guilty of such incidences are appropriately punished.”
