Akomeah | "We have a great group"

Travis Akomeah says he is pleased to have rejoined the Gills on loan until the end of the season and is benefitting from the experience of the senior professionals within the squad.

The 20-year-old centre-back played eight times earlier in the season for Gills while on loan from Watford, and is excited to return for a second spell.

Speaking to the club website he said: "I am very happy to continue my spell; I really enjoyed the first half of the season so I am now looking forward.

"We have a great group of boys, good coaching staff and I really like the vibe and environment in the changing room - there is a good team spirit.

“Sometimes people will be left out of the team but whoever is starting, this group backs each other and we all have the same ambition. We all support each other.”

Travis is one of the younger professionals in the group but says he is learning every day from the more experienced figures.

He added: “The main one is Garath McCleary, he has really helped me and given me advice but everyone in general has been very good with me.

“They are really open, I can speak to them at any time and they have had great careers. They have a lot of experience so a young player like myself can only benefit from it.

“I learn from them every day.”

One milestone the defender has achieved while at MEMS Priestfield Stadium is making his league debut, but he is now keen to force his way back into the starting XI, and then stay there.

He added: “It [making his debut] was a really big achievement, it’s something I had my mind on for a while so to finally do it was kind of a weight off my shoulders.

“I am going to have to fight for my shirt so once I get it I need to try my best to keep it.

“Having a competitive group is really important because it gets the best out of you every day; you push each other.”
