Gills new Assistant Manager, Steven Craig, admitted the opportunity to work alongside Gareth Ainsworth and Richard Dobson was “too good to turn down.”
Steven, 45, has begun work at MEMS Priestfield Stadium with immediate effect after leaving a similar role at Gala Fairydean Rovers in Scotland and, although the move is a big one for him to make, he is looking forward to the challenge.
He said: “I am delighted to get it done; I got a call about two or three weeks ago from the Gaffer and he asked me if I would be interested and it sort of snowballed from there. I can’t wait to get started!
“It came out of the blue but the chance to go back full-time working with the Gaffer, Dobbo and Watesy [David Wates] again was too good an opportunity to turn down.
“At the end of the month I’ll move down and then get started.
“I leave Gala Fairydean Rovers with a heavy heart, working with the manager Martin Scott, and the other coaches. It’s a fantastic club run by amazing people. I was there a long time and it was a successful time for us.”
Craig played under Gareth at Wycombe Wanderers and that familiarity was key in him deciding to go full-time.
He added: “That was crucial. It was important that when I did take that step it was with the right people.
“I know what they bring to the table. I think the end result next season, they want to see progression and I’m the sure fans and the owners want to see progression.
"We have got organisation and bits of recruitment to do, so it's going to be a busy next two or three weeks."
