Bradley Dack was the match winner, scoring the only goal in Gillingham's 1-0 win against Walsall at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The midfielder was delighted to score the winning goal on what was a difficult afternoon. He spoke about the tough test that Walsall provided and what was needed to secure all three points.
Dack's goal came just short of the hour, and he talked through his smart finish as well as his emotions after it hit the back of the net.
Josh Andrews came on as a half-time substitute as Gills changed their approach for the second period. Dack spoke highly of the forward and the impact he had on the game. The 31-year-old also looked ahead to Tuesday's Carabao Cup fixture against AFC Wimbledon.
Thoughts on the win...
It's an amazing feeling to score the winner, and to win the game 1-0 in the first home game. It was a real team performance. We had to grind it out at times. They are a decent side. They were top for a large proportion of last season, so they are no mugs.
They recruited well in the summer with Flinty [Aden Flint] coming in, and they are a tough team to break down. We saw that in the first half and changed it up a bit at half-time. We spoke about a couple of things, and the second half was a lot better. We did enough to win the game.
Today was about being resilient, being solid, and finding a way to win.
On his goal...
Sometimes it's better when you don't have as much time to think about it. It came quickly, I saw a gap, and you need to have a bit of luck. I think that it went through someone's legs, and it squeezed through a couple of bodies. If you're looking for anything, just make sure that you hit the target and get rewarded with the goals.
It's the best feeling in the world. You cannot explain how it actually feels. To get the winner on the first home game - it's been a good weekend!
Praise for Josh Andrews and his impact on the game...
Josh is a big boy. I think that his strengths are being what he is. Being a big man, being hard to play against, winning balls in the air, and being strong. I think that you are seeing that now. I thought that he was first class when he came on today.
We didn't think that they were going to drop so deep. It's difficult to break down, especially when they had the back five rather than the back three. I think that's why the manager changed it, and it worked.
AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night...
AFC Wimbledon come here, and I think that they won today.. they beat Lincoln. They are a decent side. We played them at the end of last season and we won 1-0. They are a good side and we will see what happens.
