Logan Dobbs was impressed with how Gillingham defended in the final 30 minutes as they beat Millwall 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Dobbs was one of the handful of changes on the hour, as Gillingham looked to see out their lead. The visitors had plenty of the ball in the closing stages, but were unable to truly punish the Gills defence, who defended well as a unit.
The young central defender has plenty of experience to turn to within the squad to help guide him, and Dobbs has been taking every opportunity that he has to learn from those around him.
Having to defend in the final 30 minutes…
That’s what we worked on in training. We knew we weren’t going to have much of the ball as they’re a Championship side, but as long as we stayed defensively as a unit, and I think that we did, I thought that it really worked.
The work in training transpiring into games…
In training, we are working on things, and as you can see on the pitch, they’re coming together, slowly. Every game I feel that we’re improving more as a team, especially as younger lads. I feel like we’re really working off the senior boys well.
Obviously, it won’t work all of the time, but when it comes off nicely it’s really rewarding. The Gaffer is really happy with it. It’s just little things that we need to work on.
On having plenty of experienced pros to look up to…
I look up to Gords [Liam Gordon], especially since he’s come in, Becks [Omar Beckles], and even Smudge [Andy Smith]. You learn a lot outside of football as well, but the leadership that they both bring to the team is really helpful.
As a defensive unit after sessions Liam Gordon, Becks and Smudge will all come over to me and will say what I can improve on. Like today, they came over and told me little things that I can improve on.
