Logan Dobbs was over the moon to score his first EFL league goal in Gillingham's 2-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
The young defender met Ronan Hale's cross and did well to guide a header into the right corner of the net to open the scoring. Dobbs was pleased about all aspects of the afternoon, as the Gills kept a clean sheet and secured a first home victory of the season.
Despite making it back-to-back wins and five games unbeaten, Dobbs knows how important it is for everybody to remain grounded, admitting there is still plenty of work to do on the training pitch as the season progresses.
There were five academy players in the matchday squad against Tranmere, with Dobbs and Harry Waldock starting and Michael Luxton coming on as a substitute. The 19-year-old is enjoying the step up into the first-team with many other members who have graduated from the Football Club's academy, and is hoping that they can all repay the faith that Gareth Ainsworth has shown in them.
On his goal...
It felt like my dream since I was 16 when I joined the club, especially scoring at the Rainham End with all of the fans. It is something I didn't believe, to be honest. I didn't know how to celebrate, but that emotion - I have never felt anything like that before.
It is funny because my Mum and Dad never come to any games, and I was like, 'Today you have to come to it.' I have scored, and I said, 'You are my lucky charm now; you have to come to every single game!' The feeling of scoring is unbelievable.
Scoring I am really happy about, but overall, I am really happy with the performance. I felt that I played well today, but as a team, getting a clean sheet and winning, I feel that we showed everyone what we can do today.
Remaining grounded as a team...
I feel that inside the building we are really improving as a team, but it is important that we don't get too carried away. I feel like on the training ground we are very humble, and we work on things that we need to work on. Even though we won today, there are a lot of things that we need to improve on, so hopefully, we can work on that during training and become better.
Having a group of younger players breaking through at the same time...
I feel like it is still very tough. Even though you look at the young lads, we are a good bunch and good players. Harry Waldock, I think, has been brilliant when he has come in. He has a bit of an illness at the moment, but I think he has been superb. Michael Luxton today came on and did really well.
I feel that even though we are young, we don't get treated as young players. We get treated as senior players, and overall I am just really happy that the Gaffer trusts us young lads, and hopefully, we can pay it back.
