Hale | "We let our heads drop"

Ronan

Ronan Hale knows that Gillingham were not good enough as they conceded three times during the second-half in the 4-1 defeat against Grimsby Town on Saturday.

Hale was disappointed with how the second-half panned out, especially after the positive start, where Conor McManus went close from Robbie McKenzie's low cross. The Northern Ireland international knows that they will have to go over the details of the second period during the week.

Assessment of the game...

Ultimately, it wasn't good enough from anyone. We all know that, and the result showed it. To get ourselves level, I felt that we could have kicked on and took it to them. In the second-half, we gave the second goal away with a penalty, which shouldn't define the game, and I feel that it did. We let our heads drop, and that can't be happening.

To lose 4-1 at home, it isn't good enough. Hopefully, we can put it right next week.

[Grimsby being the stronger side] - In aspects, yeah. We didn't win enough second balls and stuff like that. In League Two, that is what you have to be doing first and foremost. Winning your duels against your opposition, and I feel that we didn't do that. As I said, once we got it to 1-1, we should have kicked on, and that didn't happen.

On the second-half...

Obviously, both teams played in the weather conditions. We had the chance right at the start of the second-half. Robbie [McKenzie] flashed it across, and I nearly got on the end of it, and then it went to Conor [McManus]. I thought that was the momentum changing. We could have kicked on from there, and then we gave the penalty away, which happens in games, but after that we shouldn't be letting our heads drop, and it goes to four. That is our own doing.

We are going to have to watch it back and go through the fine details.

On his goal...

It's the best feeling for a striker to be scoring goals, but I would prefer it to be a leading goal rather than bringing us back with an equaliser. Goals are a positive, but when the results go like that, it means nothing.
