Robbie McKenzie is hoping that Gillingham can use their second-half turnaround as something to build on, as they came from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts went in at half-time leading 3-1, but Gills battled back in a dominant second-half display at Croud Meadow. McKenzie scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 and discussed the work that went into his goal. Elliott Nevitt then came off the bench to send a diving header past Will Brook.
McKenzie spoke about how the half-time team talk spurred the team on heading into the second-half and thanked the 484 travelling supporters for their efforts.
Building on the second half turnaround...
We're disappointed with how we started the game. I think that is a neutral feeling in there, and I feel like we should have been better from the start. We showed how good we can be in the second-half with the comeback, so if we start the games like we have with our fightback, then we will be a good team this season.
There is a great togetherness in the changing room, and it shows the fight that we have got in us, and we have got goals in us. We are showing that now. We have got to build on the momentum of how we finished the game, but we have got to start the next game with that as well.
On his penalty...
I picked what side I was going two days ago. The analyst sent me footage of their goalkeeper, so it was perfect.
I wasn't told where to go, but I picked it out myself. From watching what he does, I picked that way.
I used to take them [penalties] when I was younger, so I feel like I am good enough to take them.
[The ball being repositioned] - The wind blew the ball a little bit, so I had to re spot it, but it was fine.
Responding to the messages at half-time...
I think that sometimes you need that. I think that I certainly react better to criticism than to being praised all of the time. I think that is what we need as a group sometimes, and it is actually a bit of a reality check of where we are. It has obviously worked and got the result.
We were dominating the second-half, and I felt that if there was one team that was going to win it, it would be us. I felt that we deserved what we got, but again, we could have got more from the game.
Thanking the travelling support...
There were a lot there, and we felt it, and we obviously appreciate every single time that they come, because the travelling support has been brilliant. We do appreciate it.
