Experienced defender Ben Barclay, who serves as an overage player and mentor in the Brighton Under-21 side should be involved. Steven Hall or Lorenz Ferdinand will start in goal for Tuesday’s visitors.
Callum Mackley, Kofi Shaw, Younes Ibrahim, Valentin Joseph and George Munday all featured against Liverpool Under-21s and will be pushing to play on Tuesday night.
Manager Comments:
Gareth Ainsworth: “I want to go strong. I want to win this game. There will be a few legs that will come in and the older ones will probably be rested, but I have got some players, especially on the bench that can play. Supplemented with one or two more.”
Previous Meetings:
Gills have met Brighton’s Under-21 side once before in this competition, winning a back-and-forth affair 3-2 in October 2022.
Lewis Walker gave the Gills the lead after 19 minutes, but the visitors levelled just after the half-hour through Evan Ferguson. The future Republic of Ireland international got on the end of a cross just inside the Gillingham penalty area and sent his header into the top left corner of the goal.
Todd Miller gave Brighton the lead in the 63rd minute when he thumped home from close range, but Walker scored his second of the evening eight minutes later when he did just enough to head in Cheye Alexander’s cross towards the back post.
Will Wright scored what proved to be the winner five minutes after. The hosts had a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area on the right-hand side. Wright curled his attempt around the wall, with it sneaking into the bottom corner at the near post.
