Gillingham v Colchester United
Sky Bet League Two
MEMS Priestfield Stadium
Monday December 29, 2025
Kick-Off, 7.45pm
Team News:
Gareth Ainsworth hinted that Conor Masterson could feature in Monday’s game, as he looks to rotate his squad ahead of a busy period. The fixture will likely come too soon for Garath McCleary and Glenn Morris.
Shad Ogie, Travis Akomeah, Euan Williams and Marcus Wyllie could all be involved, having missed out on the matchday squad on Boxing Day.
Former Gill, Jack Tucker, should feature at the heart of the Colchester defence, while Kyreece Lisbie, who scored in their 1-1 draw against Crawley Town, will be looking to retain his place in the team.
Rob Hunt, Jack Payne, Will Goodwin and Owura Edwards all came on as substitutes during the Boxing Day game and will be pushing for a start.
Manager Comments:
Gareth Ainsworth - “If we could take the finish to today [Cambridge] into the start of the game against Colchester that would be great. They are going to come and have a very good front four. They are very pacy and counter-attack really well. We have got to make sure that we are aware of that, and what can we put on them at the other end."
Danny Cowley - “We are in a run of five games in a very short space of time. We have started this period well with a win against Newport and a point today. That’s four points out of our last two. We now have another really tough game against Gillingham on Monday, and we now have to dust ourselves down really quickly and prepare as professionally as we can.”
Previous Meetings:
Colchester’s last visit to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium was Gareth Ainsworth’s first home game in charge of the Football Club earlier this year. The visitors took a 20th minute lead through Jack Payne. Owura Edwards stopped the ball from going out for a goal kick before he cut it back to Payne, who rifled his shot high and into the back of the net.
Oli Hawkins replaced Joe Gbode and made an immediate impact with 20 minutes to go. Remeao Hutton floated a cross towards the six-yard box, and Hawkins was hauled to the ground, which the referee believed was a foul. Max Clark stepped up and thumped the penalty into the back of the net, and the game ended all square in a 1-1 draw.
