FA Cup draw means more miles for Gills fans
We all know that Gillingham fans will often go that extra mile to follow their heroes and the weekend’s FA Cup Second Round draw will certainly test their mettle. It has added a trip to Preston onto the fixture list on December 1 which already includes long journeys to Plymouth, Accrington, Rotherham and York before Christmas.
Doing a quick calculation, using Priestfield as a starting point, it means Gills supporters, who go to away games, will be travelling more than 2,500 miles in their next five games.
Depending on routes taken on the day etc, the round trip to Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park which comes up first is 578 miles, which is followed by the Crown Ground of Accrington Stanley (542), Preston North End’s Deepdale (524), the new Rotherham United ground New York Stadium (420) and Bootham Crescent of York City (466) which all adds up to 2,530 miles.
Thankfully the New Year starts with a short journey to Southend but then Bristol Rovers, Rochdale, Bradford City and Chesterfield loom on the horizon.
