Clark | "It was a great collective performance"

Clarky

Max Clark was delighted that Gillingham could secure all three points with his fantastic half-volley being the match-winner against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

The left-back spoke about the togetherness of the entire squad and was delighted that the coaching staff’s hard work had been rewarded.

Clark was happy to celebrate his goal with the supporters in attendance, and praised the efforts of Jake Turner, who made an incredible save in the closing seconds.

On the victory…

I thought that in the first-half, it was a bit stretched and a bit open, but we dug deep. We showed that resilience today, and what we needed. You can see that we gave it our all and we emptied our tank, as the Gaffer says that he wants from us, and I think that you saw that today.

The resilience to stay in the game, having [Jake] Turner making big saves, Dacky [Bradley Dack] clearing off the line, Galey [Sam Gale] and the others throwing their bodies on the line. It was everyone for each other. The lads that came on helped us, and it was a great collective performance today. It’s a nice feeling to come away with three points.

Togetherness and resilience in the squad…

They are a good side, and most teams when they come away from home have to try and frustrate them. Obviously, in the last ten minutes, they are going to throw everything at it, and you have to defend for your life. I think that we did that. You saw the real togetherness today, and it was nice to see the Gaffer back.

All of the staff behind the scenes, since the Gaffer has been away, have worked so hard. It’s amazing for them, getting the three points, because it has been a long time. I think that there have been games that we have deserved the win. We haven’t had much possession today, but I think that you saw resilience in the group. We’re a resilient group and have got each other’s backs. It’s so important for our season, as it’s a long season.

His goal…

I took the touch and it fell nicely for me, so I thought that it’s there to be hit, so I thought that I would try and put it into the far corner. Luckily, it went in top bins. I don’t think I will hit one as sweet as that for a long time!

I’m more happy for the three points, as it was a difficult first-half. It was a good goal, but three points are what we needed right now. It’s been a while, so we look forward to the next couple of games. We’re back at home next weekend, and get ready to go again.

[Scoring in front of the 1053 Gillingham supporters and praising their support] - It was unbelievable scenes there. They travel in numbers, they always do. I said that in my last interview, but seeing them so happy when it went in was a special moment for me, the team, and for the fans as well.

It’s just a nice feeling that it went into the goal with our fans there. They always turn up in great numbers and back us.

Jake Turner’s performance…

It’s a nice feeling seeing Turns pull off saves like that because he deserves it. He has worked so hard. People don’t see behind the scenes, and he gets his head down every day and works so hard. To see him pull off saves like that, it’s a good feeling. Everyone is buzzing for him in there.
