Gaffer | "We didn't get it right"

Gareth

Gareth Ainsworth was left disappointed with his side's defensive lapses in Gillingham's 4-1 defeat to Bromley on Saturday.

The Gills boss delivered his thoughts on the performance, and also touched upon the bright debut of Ronan Hale, and looked towards the week ahead, where Gillingham will first travel to Notts County on Tuesday night before hosting Tranmere Rovers in ME7. Ainsworth wants his team to repay the fans for their efforts with some strong performances.

On the game…

Listen, I picked the team. That is on me, that one. To the fans, I am gutted for you, because I know how important that one is. Bromley are top of the league, and they showed a lot of why they are top of the league. They took some fantastic chances, but there was some unrecognisable stuff from us.

That is probably our worst home performance for quite some time. Defensively, we weren't good at all. We let them have too many easy chances in the first-half. In the second-half, I think that they have had one shot on goal and scored it. It's typical, and a worldie. We really took it to them in the second-half, but it didn't need changes and for me to go off at half-time just for that to happen.

I expected us to be right from the start, but again, I am the manager. Put it on me. I will protect these boys because they give me everything, but we didn't get it right today.

On Ronan Hale's debut...

I thought that Ronan Hale looked very good and sharp. He is going to bring plenty of chances and opportunities. He worked well.

You saw today why he has been so highly rated. He has had three or four shots at goal, and he is the striker that I am hoping we have been waiting for to come in and score some goals.

Looking ahead…

Having the squad that we have got, there will be rotation in the team because they are a good side as well. Notts County are a very good side.

Then we are back here next week against Tranmere, where I am going to ask the boys to pay back the fans, because we owe them a performance. I want to make sure that we turn up against that team.
