Gills clinch the signing of James Brophy

The club is delighted to announce the signing of James Brophy on a two-year deal.

The 31-year-old arrives at MEMS Priestfield Stadium having helped Cambridge to achieve automatic promotion last season from League Two, scoring five times in 53 appearances as the U’s made an immediate return to the third tier.

Brophy, who can play in midfield, on the wing or at wing-back, spent a number of years in non-league Football before making his professional debut for Swindon Town in August 2015, coming off the bench in a Carabao Cup tie against Exeter.

Following a two-and-a-half year spell at the County Ground Brophy signed for Leyton Orient on a permanent basis, following an initial loan, in January 2018 and went on to make 149 appearances for the O’s, netting 11 goals.

He was part of the side that won the National League title in 2019 and was an FA Trophy runner-up in the same season.

James made his move to the Abbey Stadium in the summer of 2021 and, across a five-year spell, made 259 appearances and scored 10 goals in all competitions.

On securing his move to MEMS Priestfield Stadium, James said: “I am really excited and really happy. I had a really good conversation with Gareth [Ainsworth], I found him really relatable and genuine.

“I feel like I have got a lot of years left in me. I like to be positive on the pitch, I like to create goals and I think you are going to get someone that you know gives everything they can on the pitch."

An interview with the player will be available shortly.
