Ronan Hale was happy to net his first goal of the season on Tuesday as Gills recovered from a difficult first-half to secure a point at Chesterfield in a 1-1 draw.
Hale was bought down on the edge of the box but remained determined as he rose back to his feet and found the leveller in the 58th minute.
He discussed the performance and his excitement about the squad, before praising the supporters for their backing on the road.
The performance:
We didn't come out of the traps fast enough. We kind of let them have too much of the ball. The first-half, the boys all knew it wasn’t good enough, but we came out in the second-half with a reaction and pushed them onto the back foot and then got the goal.
Obviously, we would have liked to have got a second to get the win but if you offered us a 1-1 draw before we got here, we would have taken it. It’s a good point to take back and puts us in a good place for Saturday.
Getting off the mark:
I realised the defender was going to play it back to his keeper, so I wanted to give him a couple of yards and once I saw I was in front of goal, I wanted to get back on my feet and get a shot off.
It’s a massive goal for me as it always plays on your mind and confidence is a massive thing so I'm happy to get off the mark and hopefully many more to come now.
The travelling support:
The support is brilliant and even when we were on a bad run last season, I thought the fans were brilliant and stuck by us.
I just want to say thanks to them for coming up to Chesterfield and personally, for myself, I wanted to get my goal in front of them as well because I feel I haven't been at my marks lately.
Saturday’s trip to Rochdale:
It’s not going to be easy but hopefully it can be one where we go and get our first win off, we will go with a game plan and hopefully it will go in our favour.
