McManus | "I am delighted to be here"

Conor

Conor McManus is looking forward to proving himself to the Gillingham supporters, having signed for the Football Club on Monday from Brentford.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international is excited to get his Gills career kick-started, knowing that the opportunity to play in front of the supporters at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium is a fantastic opportunity.

The 22–year–old gave an insight into what the fans can expect from him on the pitch and is looking forward to his first campaign in senior football, starting with Luton Town in the Carabao Cup on Saturday.

On signing for the Football Club…

I’m really excited to get it over the line. I think that it was a bit of a whirlwind and it came around fairly quickly, but I am delighted to be here. To sign is unbelievable, and the lads have been really good to me. Just speaking to the manager and the coaching staff, I think that it’s somewhere where I want to be and somewhere that I can improve greatly. I am looking forward to the season.

I want to reiterate about just speaking to the manager and the coaching staff and the opportunity that they are willing to give me, and everything that I have heard about Gillingham from former coaches and former managers, I think that it looked like the perfect place to go and prove myself and get an opportunity that a lot of young players really strive for. To have the opportunity to get out there and play in front of an unbelievable fan base and an unbelievable stadium, you’d be silly to turn it down.

What the fans can expect from him…

I think someone who is just energetic and willing to work hard. I am willing to do the dirty work so the more technical players can show off. I am someone who is young and hungry and just willing to work hard for the fans and give them what they want, and that is what they can expect of me.

Looking forward to the season ahead…

Massively. I think that 21s football is one thing, but men’s football is what you strive to play. You strive to play in the leagues, and to be here and to have the opportunity to play against Luton. It will be a massive test, and I am really looking forward to it.
