Stephan Negru could be in line to start for the hosts, having made his first start in Bristol Rovers’ FA Cup victory against Bromley last weekend. Alfie Kilgour will miss Saturday’s fixture, and Darrell Clarke confirmed that there will be six or seven absentees.

Manager Comments:

Darrell Clarke - “They’ve had a tough spell, but that’s this league is, isn’t it? We can talk about all of the teams that have had tough spells, but I don’t see anybody running away with it. Maybe MK Dons with their resources and their player power and the money they’ve got and financial backing.

“But other than that, I think that the league is going to be pretty equal and there will be bad runs, good runs. We have to focus on ourselves. We have to try and get into that rhythm and get into a good run ourselves and obviously try and back up Saturday’s win.”

Gareth Ainsworth - “We’re in a good place. If that mental thing of me being back helps, then brilliant. I am looking forward to doing it as a unit, as a team, and as a group of fans. I think that there is over 1000 coming to Bristol Rovers on Saturday, which is magnificent support. I aim to make sure that they see the efforts on that pitch are proud to wear that Gillingham shirt.”

Previous Meetings:

The last meeting between the two clubs at the Memorial Stadium was in December 2020, with no supporters in attendance due to COVID.

A brace from Vadaine Oliver, scoring in either half, proved the difference, as Gillingham left Bristol with all three points.

Oliver opened the scoring after 26 minutes. Jack Tucker’s long ball forward turned into a through ball for the striker, who latched onto it ahead of Anssi Jaakkola and prodded it beyond the Bristol Rovers goalkeeper.

Oliver scored his second with a little over 15 minutes remaining. Ryan Jackson played a ball down the right for Kyle Dempsey to latch onto. The midfielder had the time to deliver a cross into the six-yard box, finding Oliver at the back post, who headed home from close range.
