Gillingham v Shrewsbury Town
Sky Bet League Two
MEMS Priestfield Stadium
Saturday May 2, 2026
Kick-Off, 3pm
Team News:
Seb Palmer Houlden and Sam Gale will be available for selection, having missed the defeat at Barnet due to injury. Gareth Ainsworth confirmed that a couple of players will require late fitness tests. Cameron Antwi and Euan Williams will miss out due to injury.
Sam Vokes could be in line to start his very final appearance in professional Football. He will retire after Saturday's fixture.
Sulli Booth could start his first home game having netted on his pro debut at Barnet last weekend.
Shrewsbury boss Gavin Cowan has indicated that he will play a strong side for their visit to ME7. Josh Ruffels will be pushing to start the game, having come off the bench to score in Shrewsbury’s draw with Fleetwood.
Manager Comments:
Gareth Ainsworth - “They have had a resurgence of form since the new manager came in, and obviously, they were stuck in some dodgy form at the start of the season, but they have finished well. We know that we will have a tough game.”
Gavin Cowan - “We're finishing the season strong, we're unbeaten, we're picking up points, we're trying to be the best version of themselves.
“They (the fans) don't want to travel all the way to Gillingham for a half-hearted team. So we won't be doing it half-hearted.”
Previous Meetings:
The two teams have met on 72 occasions, with a Shrewsbury victory and the draw being the two most common results, occurring 26 times each. Gillingham have won 20 times in this fixture.
Our last meeting at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium occurred in January 2022, with the game ending goalless.
The visitors thought that they had taken a first-half lead when they eventually bundled the ball over the line following a free-kick into the box. However, Pontus Dahlberg had been initially fouled, ruling out the goal. Dahlberg was soon called back into action as he did well to push Elliott Bennett’s free-kick around the post.
Danny Lloyd came close for the Gills when his free-kick from over 30 yards out curled just wide of the top right-hand corner. Olly Lee nearly caught Marco Marosi out late into the game when his high, looping ball into the penalty area went goalward. It appeared to be dipping into the goal, forcing Marosi to backpedal and push over the crossbar.
