Team News:

Zech Obiero is going to be out of action for at least a few weeks, having gone off with a hamstring issue in the win at Rochdale. Will Goodwin also came off at the same time, but Gareth Ainsworth says his issue is not as bad as first feared.

Ethan Coleman and Bradley Dack are back training on the grass as they continue their recoveries from injury. Zane Albarus is close and will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s fixture.

Darrell Clarke confirmed that he has a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of Tranmere’s visit to ME7.

Gareth Ainsworth: “We are on the back of a great win at the moment, and the boys are in good spirits. Despite a couple of major injuries, we seem to be pulling through. The fans have been great, and I think that they are expecting us to take off at home soon. I want to do that for them, but we are going to have to be on our best game to beat Tranmere.”

Darrell Clarke: “I have come up against Gareth loads of times. He is a great guy, Gareth. I get on great with him, and we go back a long way. Gareth’s teams are always very difficult to beat. They are well-organised and well drilled.

“He has had a bit of time now at Gillingham, and you can see what he is trying to do… Gillingham is a tough away day, but the focus will be on us and what we can try and do to win the game.”

Gills ran out 2-0 winners when the teams met at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium in March 2023.

The hosts took the lead in the 32nd minute through Shaun Williams. The goal came from a smart corner routine, where Alex MacDonald floated a cross deep into the penalty area. Williams made a run around towards the ball unchallenged and headed goalward. His attempt had too much power for Joe Murphy, who could not keep it out despite his best efforts.

Conor Masterson made it two with seven minutes remaining. Williams was shielding the ball from a defender on the byline and was shoved to the ground. However, the midfielder did well to keep hold of the ball before playing a low centre. Aiden O’Brien stepped over it, allowing Masterson to thump home from six yards out.

The most common result when the two sides meet is in fact the draw, occurring 18 times. Tranmere leads the head-to-head with 15 wins to Gillingham’s 10.
