Gillingham were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Saturday with Luton Town winning 3-0 at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
Liam Gordon missed the fixture due to suspension, while Owen Mason started in goal, having signed on an emergency loan from Mansfield.
Nick Freeman, Kadeem Harris, Zane Albarus and James Brophy all made their first competitive starts for the Football Club.
Mason was called into action in the opening seconds. A ball was played down the right wing, allowing Jake Richards to make his way towards the box unchallenged. He carried the ball inside onto his left foot before getting a shot away. Fortunately, it lacked the power to test Mason, who got down to save.
Andy Smith produced a last-ditch challenge to deny Nakhi Wells a golden opportunity. The ball was lofted over the top of the Gills defence, and Wells did well to bring it under control as he made his way into the penalty area. As he was about to pull the trigger, Smith got a crucial foot in to take the ball out of Wells’ path.
In the seventh minute, the visitors had the ball in the back of the net when Kal Naismith got on the end of a corner. However, Mason had been fouled as the corner was played into the area, so the goal did not stand.
Ronan Hale nearly found himself through on goal after fine work from Brophy. The midfielder evaded one challenge before threading a pass in behind the visitors' defence for Hale to latch onto. However, he was beaten to it by Josh Keeley, who had come well off his line to deal with the danger.
In the 13th minute, Mason produced a fine save to keep out Jordan Clark’s attempt. A lofted ball was played through the middle, with Clark running through unchallenged. He brought it under control before entering the box, and Smith soon arrived to apply pressure. The Luton man did well to poke it goalward towards the far corner, but Mason got across to push the ball away from the danger.
Following the early onslaught, Gillingham settled into the fixture, restricting Luton to little, as the game became a midfield battle. The League One side attempted to play balls over the top of the Gills defence, but the hosts did well to deal with them.
Wells gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time. The forward received the ball inside the penalty area after Jayden Luker spotted his run and brought it under control, and remained composed to slot the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
HALF-TIME: Gillingham 0-1 Luton Town
A Benedict Benagr cross caused Mason a problem as the visitors broke forward. He carried it down the left wing before floating a cross into the box, but it carried too close to the goal, causing the Mansfield loanee to quickly react and tip it over the crossbar for a corner, which came to nothing.
Benagr produced another testing delivery soon after, which found Kasey Palmer unmarked inside the penalty area. Fortunately, his header went wide of the target.
On the hour, Benagr doubled the visitors' advantage. Clark played a through ball in behind the Gillingham defence, which was latched onto by Wells. The forward aimed a low drive towards the far bottom left corner, which Mason got a solid hand to. However, Benagr reacted the quickest to put the ball into the back of the net.
Harris nearly pulled a goal back for the hosts moments later. Brophy was carrying the ball inside before he spotted the run of Harris down the left. The ball was played into the feet of the Wideman, who brought the ball into the box and shifted it inside onto his right foot before striking the ball. He directed his attempt towards the near post, and Keeley had to react quickly, saving with his feet before Luton cleared their lines.
In the 68th minute, Gillingham made five changes as Conor McManus, Sheldon Kendall, Harry Waldock, Will Goodwin and Sully Booth all entered the game in the place of Logan Dobbs, Harris, Albarus, Seb Palmer-Houlden and Hale.
Mason had to be alert to deny Shayden Morris at his near post. Hakeem Odoffin was allowed to carry the ball to the edge of the penalty area before offloading it to Morris, who tried to catch the Mansfield loanee cold. However, Mason did well to save with his feet, sending it around the post for a corner.
The visitors continued to apply pressure, as a Naismith corner nearly crept in. He curled an inswinging corner from the right, which forced Mason to backpedal and tip it over his crossbar.
It was rinse and repeat from the resulting corner, as Naismith’s delivery was curled towards the back post and nearly snuck into the side netting before Mason reacted quickly to push it behind for another corner.
Moments later, Gideon Kodua made it three for Luton, as they continued to press. Mason was called into action again to make a save, and the rebound sat perfectly for Kodua to head home from close range.
Gillingham went in search of a late consolation, as Robbie McKenzie sent a header towards the far corner of the net. Keeley did well to push it away before the ball dropped down to Booth, who fired a volley towards goal that was well blocked.
Kodua nearly scored his second in the final seconds. A ball from the right was perfectly curled towards the penalty spot, with the flight of it allowing Kodua to get on the end of it. Fortunately, his flick towards goal hit the post.
