Sam Vokes is confident that the group can go on another strong unbeaten run following recent displays.
Gills are on a run of three games without defeat, and Vokes knows that putting together a strong run of results is important in ensuring that the team finishes at the top end of the league.
The former Welsh international discussed his love for playing away from home and how he has adjusted to playing in League Two.
Belief in the group…
I think that we’re a solid group. Obviously, we came out of a run of not winning games for a while, so I think that’s behind us now. I fully believe in this group, and we can go on another run as we did beforehand. The group are looking forward, after a few meetings this week- reviewing and looking forward, the group are ready to go at Shrewsbury on Saturday.
Importance of putting together a good run of results…
That’s huge. I came halfway through that, and you can feel it in the group. I could feel it when I joined the club, and this season started off as I believe it ended last year. That’s where we see ourselves at. Those sort of runs, putting that consistency together, and now the Gaffer is fully back in the building. It’s good to have him around every day, and hopefully, we can be part of putting another one of those runs together, as I think that's what you need to climb up this division.
Playing away from home…
I love playing at home, but for me, playing away, I love that situation. You take your little pocket of fans away, and you go to an away ground. That’s what it’s all about. For me, it’s always sweeter winning on the road, getting those sort of victories. Hopefully, we can get one at the weekend.
Adjusting to life in League Two…
It’s been good. As I have mentioned, coming into this squad at the start, it was great to join a new group. I had opportunities in the summer to perhaps do something else, but for me I love playing the game. As soon as the manager called me and wanted me in and around it, it was a project that I was excited to get involved with.
It has been that since I came in, to be honest. It’s a great group and I have been getting to learn the level. You have people like Garath McCleary and Bradley Dack who have played at a higher level as well. There’s good experience in this dressing room. I have really enjoyed being a part of this dressing room, and hopefully we can be part of something successful.
