Waldy | "I want to perform better in every game"

Waldock

Harry Waldock is enjoying his run in the Gillingham side but knows he needs to keep performing well as the team prepare for the long trip to Rochdale on Saturday.

The academy graduate has started the previous two games, and impressed in his substitute appearance at Fleetwood. Waldock knows how strong the competition for places is in the midfield, but is keen to keep his head down and to continue giving his all as he looks to stake his claim to a place in the squad.

The midfielder spoke on the experience of playing twice in a week, and discussed how they will be building towards the Rochdale fixture in training as the week progresses.

Gills head into Saturday's game off the back of three successive draws, and Waldock believes that they are slowly piecing everything together as they go in search of their first win of the season.

The experience of playing Tuesday-Saturday, and preparations for Rochdale...

It is definitely different. The fact that it's not just a case of recovering; it's now recovering, getting back on the bus and travelling. I am taking it all in my stride. It is a great experience for me, and I am trying to live in the moment, take it all in, and learn from every experience that comes my way.

From the game against Chesterfield, we are just recovering at the moment, and then towards the end of the week is when we will find out more about what they are about, how we can hurt them, and how we can focus in on trying to win the game.

Building off the recent draws and turning them into wins...

If we can group the games together now, and I am talking about the quality that we had here at home the other day, and our resilience against Chesterfield the other night, then it's about time that we get three points on the board.

I think the fans can see it where we are building something here, and there are pieces coming each game now. Once it clicks, I think that we are going to be a very strong outfit.

On getting his opportunity to start games and trying to keep his place in the side...

I am loving it. I always knew that coming into the season it was going to be another case of fighting for my place in the team. You never want injuries to happen, but that is where I have been given my opportunity. I am trying to come into the team and prove why I am still good enough to keep my shirt.

I think that it is going well, and I am happy with how I am performing. It's a case of keeping my head down and trying to keep my shirt at this point. I am aware of the fact that there are other really good midfielders who are either injured or coming back from injury. I just want to prove to the manager that I am good enough to stay in the squad.

The competition, in a way, is actually a positive for me, because I feel like it's going to push me forward. It's not a case where I have got the shirt, and I am thinking that I can relax now. In my head, I am now thinking that I want to perform even better every single game and get better every single day, so that in the Gaffer's mind he can't really drop me, which is what I am trying to strive towards.
