Brophy | "It's important not to get too down"

Brophy

James Brophy reiterated the need for Gillingham to do things right in both boxes after their 3-0 defeat against Walsall on the opening day of the season.

The hosts applied plenty of pressure on the Walsall goal, with Brophy striking the crossbar and creating several opportunities for his teammates. However, they were unable to break the deadlock and were duly punished before the game got away from the Gills. That aspect disappointed Brophy greatly.

The attacking midfielder was joined in attack by Ronan Hale and Will Goodwin, who linked up well throughout. Brophy believes that was a positive to take from the game.

The need to get it right in both boxes...

I think that we hit the bar, including myself, three or four times. We have countless shots from inside the box that we either don't test enough or miss the target. I think that we were sided with the momentum, and then from our corner we allow that to get away from ourselves.

There is still time to react and get back into the game, but we don't allow ourselves to, which is probably the most disappointing takeaway.

I think that there are inconsistencies that you will have throughout the 46 league games where maybe sometimes you don't convert as many as you like, or you convert more than you think.

There is nothing wrong with taking a draw. If you can't score in one box, then don't concede in the other.

The link up play going forward...

I am comfortable anywhere and just like being on the pitch. Ronan [Hale] is definitely a player like myself that wants to link up, and you can see the attributes that he brings. Definitely in front of goal. On another day he probably scores a couple himself. He's so positive in his play and forward thinking.

I think that we have got a wide spectrum of players and depth. There was positives in that, but it's hard to see that right now.

Remaining upbeat...

It is only one game. I think it's more disappointing because for such a large part of the game we did play well... I think it's more disappointing when you're in the game, and when really you feel that from the first hour you should probably win.

It's definitely important not to get too down. That's one game out of 46. There are more positives to take from that game than negatives. It's about taking them and ensuring that we can kind of provide them across a whole game rather than just parts of it.
