Dack | "Everyone should be really proud"

Dacky

Bradley Dack was pleased to come away with all three points as his brace helped Gillingham beat Newport County 3-1 at Rodney Parade, making it 21 league games unbeaten, a new club record.

The midfielder, who wore the captain's armband in the win, admits that it is a fantastic achievement and credited everybody associated with the Football Club for playing their part in making history.

Having scored a first-minute goal, Newport had the chance to double their lead soon after. However, they were denied from the penalty spot. Glenn Morris pulled off a brilliant save, which Dack credited as the turning point in the fixture.

Dack discussed his two goals, netting his 100th career goal in the process, with one coming from open play and the other from the penalty spot. The captain on the day had other chances to add to his tally, but knew the final result was all that mattered.

Despite breaking the unbeaten record, the 31-year-old is keen to reinforce the importance of staying grounded. He also discussed how crucial the togetherness within the squad has been, and commended the 601 supporters who made the trip to Wales.

Breaking the Football Club's unbeaten record...

It shouldn't go unnoticed how big this achievement is. The club, I think, has been around for 130 years, and we're the ones that have got the unbeaten record, so everyone should be really proud.

Everyone that is part of this Football Club, the fans included, should be proud and it's amazing for them to come out today and see us achieve that, and then get the pictures to prove it at the end.

Glenn Morris's penalty save proving the turning point...

He's ageing like a fine wine, the Cat man! It was a massive turning point, because 2-0 is obviously a lot different to 1-0. I know that's obvious, but to come back from two is difficult. It gave us a real lift.

We grabbed the goal not long after, and we changed our shape and went to a three in the middle, and it was a bit better and easier. We got to grips with the game, and our experience and our quality told. We saw it out in the second half.

His two goals and other opportunities during the game...

[The nature of his first goal] - I've made a career of it! I was in a lot of space on the edge of the box, and luckily it fell to me, and it's about picking your spot and hitting the target. I managed to find the gap, and that calmed us down a bit to get it back to 1-1.

[His second via the penalty spot] - I was the penalty taker at the start of the season, but each one we have had so far, I have not been on the pitch, so it was nice to get the penalty and put it away.

I should have maybe had a hat-trick. The first one just came at a bit of an awkward height. I tried to swivel and volley it, and I bet on myself to hit the target. The one at the end, I have tried to lob the goalkeeper, but he has, unfortunately, stayed on his line.

I am happy with the two, and more importantly, happy with the three points.

Keeping grounded and the togetherness in the squad...

There are 37 games left this season. We're nowhere near done with what we want to do. We're just building towards being a better team than we were in the game before. We're doing a good job of that at the moment.

We came against hard times today, going 1-0 down so early. Like I have said before, it shows the character of this team and squad. Everyone is involved. We're really together. I think that you can see that from the outside.

Conor [Masterson] and Litts [Armani Little] made the trip today, and it shows that we're a real team and that it is going to be a team effort. Everyone is going to be needed. It's a nice start, but we have to keep this going.

The travelling support...

I'm sure a few of them got wet, but we have sent them home happy! I have said it before, but they were amazing today. They really are like an extra player out there. They get behind you, and to see so many of them travel quite a long way today is pretty amazing, and we're glad to have got them the three points. We got the picture at the end, which is amazing, and they will be part of this history as well.

All in all, it was a good day, but there is still a lot of work to do.
