Cambridge United v Gillingham
Sky Bet League Two
The Cledara Abbey Stadium
Saturday March 14, 2026
Kick-Off, 3pm
Team News:
Sam Gale remains a doubt for Saturday’s game at Cambridge, having come down with an illness following the draw against Fleetwood. Josh Andrews will miss the fixture as he serves the second match of his two-game suspension.
Harry Waldock will be available for selection, having been recalled from his loan at Cray Wanderers.
Nelson Khumbeni should be involved again, having made his return to action on Tuesday night. Ethan Coleman will be assessed until the final moments after picking up a knock in the same game. Gareth Ainsworth is hoping a couple of players could return from their injuries on Saturday.
Elliott Nevitt, who is on loan at Cambridge from Gillingham, is ineligible to feature in the fixture. Louis Appere, who came off the bench to score the equaliser in Cambridge’s draw at Accrington Stanley last weekend, could return to their starting XI.
Manager Comments:
Neil Harris: “We just want to win every game. It is not possible, I don’t think that it is possible, but every game is going to be a challenge and a test between now and the end of the season. None more so than Gillingham, they will be hurting from a really poor defeat on Tuesday night.
"We are just focused on that. At the moment, every team that we play know that they are in for a challenge, and we make it difficult for them.”
Gareth Ainsworth: “Let’s go to the Abbey on Saturday and put it right. This is great this game. Whether that means a win, or a good performance, or even a point. We want to go there and bring something home. I will be going for the win as I always do.”
Previous Meetings:
Saturday’s fixture will be the 26th meeting between the two teams. Gillingham leads the head-to-head with 15 wins to Cambridge’s seven. There have also been three draws in this fixture.
Our last visit to the Abbey Stadium came in September 2021, where a goal in each half saw the Gills come out victorious. Vadaine Oliver opened the scoring after 26 minutes. John Akinde flicked on Robbie McKenzie’s diagonal pass towards the penalty area, and Oliver ran onto the ball uncontested.
Dimitar Mitov hesitated in the Cambridge goal, which allowed the Gillingham striker to prod it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Danny Lloyd doubled the visitors’ lead on the hour. He cut out a pass just inside the Gillingham half before travelling into the Cambridge penalty area uncontested. Lloyd found himself with space and decided to shoot from a tight angle. His shot was hit with plenty of venom, finding the top corner at the near post, leaving Mitov helpless in his attempts to keep it out.
