Sam Vokes knows Saturday's game will be tough against Cambridge, but says the squad are determined to put things right following Tuesday's defeat at home to MK Dons.
The former Wales international is aware of Saturday’s opponents’ promotion aspirations, but reiterated the need for the Gills to concentrate on themselves as they look to get back on track.
On Saturday’s game…
We need any game at the moment, just to get back out there. It comes around quickly. Cambridge is going to be a tough test. They’re flying high at the top of the table, but it’s down to us to just concentrate on us. They’re doing what they’re doing, and for us, we just go there and get back to what I know that we can achieve.
The reaction from Tuesday night…
We’re fully focused on Cambridge now. We have looked at it, and we have reviewed it. We have gone over things that weren’t good enough, and we have identified them. We have had some honest conversations, I will say that. It takes a lot to have those conversations, and it’s not what everyone wants to have, but to learn and to get better as people and as players, you have to have those conversations. Hopefully, it has been taken in and taken on board.
Using his experience to offer the correct messages to the squad…
I think that’s my job and duty as a senior player to do that, and also manage those situations as well. Tuesday night wasn’t a nice situation for anyone at the club. I don’t think that it was something that we can accept as a performance, but I will say that there is a good group of people in there that want to put it right.
They want to put things right, and we have gone through things off the pitch and on the training pitch this morning. The beautiful thing about football is that we go again on Saturday.
His role in the team…
I’m in the business of football to play games. I want to be out there, and I want to be playing, and I want to be contributing myself.
For me, it’s a chance to go again on Saturday, and whichever role that comes from, whether it's from a starting berth or off the bench, I will give my best for the club.
