Chesterfield v Gillingham
Sky Bet League Two
SMH Group Stadium
Tuesday February 17, 2026
Kick-Off, 7.45pm
Team News:
Gareth Ainsworth hinted that changes could be made for Tuesday night’s game. Bradley Dack, Cameron Antwi, Josh Andrews and Seb Palmer-Houlden all came on as substitutes against Crewe and will be pushing to start.
Garath McCleary and Sam Vokes will be assessed in the build-up to the fixture.
Lee Bonis, who scored for Chesterfield in their draw against Harrogate, will be unavailable for the fixture due to suspension. Freddie Ladapo and Will Grigg will be looking to start the game in attack for Tuesday’s hosts.
Manager Comments:
Paul Cook: “It will be a tough game. Early on in the season, they beat us down there, and the game swung Gillingham’s way on a couple of big decisions and then a couple of good finishes from their lads, which is fine.”
“Gareth, like myself, is now vastly experienced and has had multiple successes; and he will do what he has to do to get Gillingham where they need to be. For us, we need three points tomorrow [Tuesday] night. It’s right back on the bike, and we will go again.”
Gareth Ainsworth: “I am still confident in these boys that they can go and beat any team in the league. I really do. That includes Chesterfield on Tuesday. We will have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down, no one will feel sorry for themselves, and just get on with it- and defend set pieces better than we did today.”
Previous Meetings:
The clubs have met on 73 occasions, with Gillingham leading the head-to-head with 32 wins. Chesterfield have won 23 times, and 18 games have ended in a draw, including last season’s game at Chesterfield.
Gills opened the scoring after 14 minutes through Elliott Nevitt. Aaron Rowe did well to bring the ball under control before carrying it into the penalty area. He cut it back for Nevitt, who shifted the ball onto his right foot to create space before slotting into the bottom right corner.
The visitors held onto their lead until 13 minutes from time, as Will Grigg broke the Gillingham resistance. Ryan Colclough had the ball down the left-hand side and played a pass into the penalty area in the direction of Grigg, who curled his sweeping shot in at the near post. Colclough nearly won the game late for Chesterfield, but his thumping volley from close range flashed just wide of the goal.
