Manager Comments:
Lee Bell: “They have got a team that does not just have the know-how and older players, but they have got some really good players. I am sure that they are looking to build and get that positive run going, because they have got plenty of games to go.
“It is going to be a difficult test. We know what we are going to be up against. Lots of energy, lots of balls into your box, and second phases. It’s going to be a tough test, but we have got to do is keep trying to implement what we have delivered in the last few games.”
Gareth Ainsworth: “Both teams probably have similar ambitions. We are both looking to see how far we can progress, and we have got the play-offs just above us. We are slightly further away than Crewe, but I think that they have played a couple of more games than us, so we have got to make sure that we go up there with a belief that we can win the game. We want to get as close as we can to these play-offs.”
Previous Meetings:
Crewe narrowly leads the head-to-head, with 25 wins to Gillingham’s 24. The fixture has also seen 11 draws.
Our last victory at Crewe came during the 2020/21 season, which was played behind closed doors. Gills were under a lot of pressure throughout, and were saved by the woodwork in the first-half when Daniel Powell’s effort bounced off the outside of the post and out for a goal-kick.
Joe Lumley, who had signed on an emergency loan, did well to get a hand on Callum Ainley’s powerful strike to push it over the crossbar. The hosts hit the frame of the goal again when former Gill Mikael Mandron got on the end of a low cross, which came off the inside of the post before Lumley gathered the loose ball.
The defining moment came just short of the hour. John Akinde, who had entered the game three minutes prior, met Jordan Graham’s left-wing cross with a thumping header that Will Jaaskelainen could not keep out despite getting both hands on the ball.
