The Football Club is absolutely devastated to announce the passing of former defender, Richard Green.
Richard sadly died on Thursday at the age of 58.
Green played 253 times for the Gills and scored 17 times in a seven-year spell, having signed from Swindon in 1992.
He made his Gillingham debut in a 3-2 win over Cardiff City at Ninian Park on March 10 that year. He scored twice with David Crown netting the winner late on.
Green sits 27th on our all-time appearance list, level with Bradley Dack.
Born in Wolverhampton, Richard began his career in the youth team at Shrewsbury Town and went on to make over 125 appearances for the club before heading to the County Ground in 1991.
Following his stint at ME7, Richard went on to play for Walsall, Rochdale and Northampton Town.
He won Gillingham’s “Player of the Year” in 1992-93, and then again in 1993-94.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Richard’s family, friends and loved ones at this very difficult time. We will pay tribute to Richard prior to our game against Barrow in the FA Cup on November 7.
