Andy Smith is pleased to be back in and amongst the team following a short injury layoff ahead of Gillingham's trip to Fleetwood on Saturday afternoon.
The defender is hoping that the Gills can come away with maximum points, knowing how big a confidence boost that will bring heading into a difficult festive period.
Smith is anticipating a tough game at Highbury Stadium, but reiterates the positivity within the squad heading into the fixture.
On recovering from his injury…
I’m feeling really good. It was a tough couple of weeks for me. It’s something, fortunately enough, I’ve not had to deal with too many injuries in my career. Obviously, I picked one up at the end of last season whilst I was on loan, but it’s part of being a footballer. Hopefully, I’ve worked myself into a better position than I was when I got injured.
It makes you realise how much you do enjoy playing football, and how much you love your job. When you’re not able to do it, I think that it is the hardest part about being a footballer. Obviously, being out of the team is not nice, but you still get to train every day and do what you love, but whilst you’re injured, it’s definitely the toughest part. It’s made me realise that I need to stay on top of everything. Not getting complacent in terms of my rehab work and everything that I do day in and day out.
Getting back to winning ways over the Christmas period…
There’s that run of four games going into, and just after Christmas, so three points would be a massive confidence boost. It would be nice for the table. Obviously, we don’t pick and choose which games we want to win and don’t want to win. We go out there every week to try to win. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite happened for us, with five draws in the last five. Hopefully, we can turn a few of them into some wins.
On the Fleetwood game…
It’s going to be a long trip, so we will want to get there as quickly as we can. It’s the last Friday before Christmas, so there will be lots of traffic, but the boys are feeling really positive about things still. The Gaffer won’t really allow any negativity. We’re all confident to go up there and hopefully impose ourselves on Fleetwood and get something out of the game.
