Sam Vokes was pleased to get off the mark, scoring his first Gillingham goal in the 1-0 victory against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
Vokes, a second-half substitute, headed the winning goal from Max Clark's corner, securing a first win for Gils at Boundary Park since February 2000. The forward was pleased with the efforts from the entire team in what was a hard-fought fixture.
The former Welsh international, reunited with Gareth Ainsworth in the summer, having worked with him at Wycombe Wanderers, can see that the squad have bought into the Gills boss' philosophy and is impressed with the close nature in the camp.
Vokes also discussed Cruz Beszant's debut for the Football Club and praised the Gillingham supporters after 549 travelling fans were in attendance.
Scoring his first Gills goal...
It's an amazing feeling. For me personally, joining a new club it is a milestone, and it's one that you want to tick off, scoring your first goal. I had a bit of frustration in pre-season, I suppose. Last season, I broke my arm, so I didn't get a full season under my belt, so I am building up minutes. Days like these are what it's all about, celebrating in front of the away fans and scoring a goal. I scored the goal, but the huge effort that we put in today shows how far we are going and where we're going. The boys did us proud today.
Working with Gareth Ainsworth and the squad...
I know how Gareth works and I know how his staff work. It's a good, tight group that can hopefully go on and do something special, and it would be nice to be a part of. For me at the minute, it's about growing on that, the lads growing on that and building every week.
Cruz Beszant's professional debut...
It was amazing for him. I was delighted for him. To come on and have an impact like that. It was our first away trip, so we both got up last night and sang in front of the team, so that was a first experience for both of us. I’m at one side and he’s at the other side of his career, and I wish him all the best, because to make an impression and come and travel away and play a half-hour in a game like that, which was high intensity, takes a lot of courage. Fair play to him.
On the number of travelling supporters...
I was surprised, but I wasn't that surprised, because I have seen how they have been over the last few weeks. Since I have been here, they have been amazing. At home, the roar and the crowd that we have got and the noise that they make is amazing. Travelling away, it's my first experience of an away day, and I look forward to many more.
