Sam Vokes says there is a determination in the squad to bounce back against Grimsby Town on Saturday.
The former Welsh international says a positive vibe has been in the camp following an improvement in recent performances, but following the midweek defeat to Cheltenham, he reiterated the frustration within the group and that they want to put things right in front of the home support.
Vokes started alongside Ronan Hale in attack on Tuesday night, assisting his goal with a smart flick on, and has been impressed with what he has seen from Hale since he joined the Football Club.
With the 2025/26 season heading into its final three fixtures, the forward has called upon everyone to give it everything that they have as they look to finish the campaign as strong as possible.
Bouncing back from Tuesday night…
The boys are very determined to get a result. I think it is quite evident that there has been a turn in performances, I think, from the lads. It was frustrating the other night because I thought that we were very good, especially in the first-half.
To concede late on the way that we did, I thought we were well deserving of at least a point out of the game. There is frustration lying there, but we want to come back home on Saturday, put it right and put in a good end to the season.
Playing alongside Ronan Hale…
When I played in successful teams in my past, we played in a partnership as a two. You don’t see it as much these days, but having someone of Ronan’s quality next to me, he knows where to make the runs, and he has that instinct and that finish.
I think that he can be a great asset for Gillingham going forward, and you have seen the evidence of that with the goals that he scores and the performances that he puts in.
We had a discussion before the game, and I said that when the ball comes into me, just gamble in behind. I almost don’t need to tell him to do that either because he has got that instinct and he has that hunger to go and score goals, and he knows where to pick the balls up.
As I said, I think that he will be a great asset to Gillingham going forward.
Giving it everything for the final three games…
It is a funny one this time of year. I think that for me personally, and I reiterate it to the squad, that every time you step onto the pitch, it is important. You never know when your last one is going to be, so I say leave it all out there as a team and as players individually.
I think that you just have to go and attack these three games now. It is quite easy for people to write it off and say that the season is done, but for us, there is a pride within ourselves, and you have to go out there and represent the shirt that you’re playing for.
There is always something on the line as professional footballers, and we will give everything that we have got for the last three games.
